List of Suitable Commercially Available Hamster Cages

Struggling to find an adequately sized hamster cage? This list is here to help.

EUROPE

Skyline Rodent cage Falco

Size: 100cm x 50cm x 75cm

Price: €149,99

Suitable for: All hamster species.

Available from: Zooplus

Notes: This cage is only available in the 100cm x 50cm size from the German zooplus. However, people from other European countries can still order it. Tip: if you do not understand German, use google chrome to automatically translate the website for you.

Living World Eco Habitat

Size: Two size options available; 98.5cm x 58.5cm x 61cm (Medium) or 118.5cm x 78.5cm x 61cm (Large)

Price: €149,99/£129,99 (Medium) or €199,99/£149,99 (Large)

Suitable for: Both sizes suitable for all hamster species.

Available from: Zooplus

Notes: The lid of this cage must be meshed from the inside as the holes pose a safety hazard (hamsters being rodents are enticed by holes like this and will attempt to squeeze through; either escaping or becoming stuck). If using this enclosure with a Syrian hamster in particular, it is recommended that you implement addition measures to chew-proof the enclosure (see HERE).

Barney Pet Cage

Size: 100cm x 54cm x 45cm

Price: €59,99-€69,99/£59,99

Suitable for: Campbell's dwarf hamster, Roborovski dwarf hamster, Chinese hamster, Winter Whiite dwarf hamster.

Unsuitable for: Syrian hamster.

Available from: Zooplus

Notes: The Barney cage is unsuitable for Syrian hamsters not because of the size, but because of the depth of the base. The base only allows for a maximum of16cm - this can work for many dwarf hamsters, however it is simply just not possible for an average sized Syrian to burrow in this depth. However, it (along with other wire enclosures deemed unsuitable due to depth of base) can be made appropriate for syrian hamsters with the construction of a DIY base (made out of melamine, or other hamster safe wood) such as those seen HERE.

Alexander Small Pet Cage

Size: 101cm x 52.5cm x 51cm

Price:€69,99-€79,99/£69,99

Available from: Zooplus

Suitable for: Campbell's dwarf hamster, Roborovski dwarf hamster, Chinese hamster, Winter White dwarf hamster

Unsuitable for: Syrian hamster

Notes: Likewise with the Barney Pet Cage, the Alexander is not ideal for a Syrian hamster due to the shallow depth of the base. However, it can work just fine for any of the four domesticated dwarf species and can be made suitable for syrian hamsters with the construction of a DIY base like previously mentioned.

Alaska Hamster Cage

Size: 84cm x 48.5cm x 44cm

Price: €34,99-€39,99/£34,99

Available from: Zooplus

Suitable for: Campbell's dwarf hamster, Roborovski dwarf hamster, Chinese hamster, Winter White dwarf hamster.

Unsuitable for: Syrian hamster

Notes: The Alaska hamster cage complies with the absolute bare minimum for the dwarf species. It is not idea nor an enclosure to strive for, it is just the bare minimum. Ideally, your hamster should be provided with a much larger enclosure than this if possible. It is not suitable for a Syrian hamster due to both floorspace and lack of depth for an appropriate bedding depth.

NORTH AMERICA

United States & Canada

Kevin 82 Hamster Cage

Size: 32.25" x 20" x 14.25"

Price: Varies

Availability: United States,Canada

Suitable for: Campbell's dwarf hamster, Roborovski dwarf hamster, Chinese hamster, Winter White dwarf hamster

Unsuitable for: Syrian hamster

Notes: This cage complies with what is considered to be the absolute bare minimum for any of the four domesticated dwarf species. The base depth is not perfect, but it is just okay for a dwarf hamster. Due to base depth and floorspace, it is not suitable at all for a Syrian hamster.

Prevue Small Animal Home

Size: 32.5" x 19" x 17.5"

Price:Varies

Availability: United States, Canada.

Suitable for: Campbell's dwarf hamster, Roborovski dwarf hamster, Chinese hamster, Winter White dwarf hamster.

Unsuitable for: Syrian hamster

Notes: This cage complies with the bare minimum for any of the four domesticated species. It is a much more reasonably priced option compared to the Kevin 82. Due to size however, it is not suitable for a Syrian hamster.

Glass Terrariums/Aquariums

Size: 40g Breeder (36" x 18" x 16") or 75g (48" x 18" x 20")

Price: Prices vary, but these tanks can be anywhere from just $40-$75 at Dollar Per Gallon sales to ranging up to $200+.

Availability: United States, Canada, or second-hand sites such as Craigslist & Kijiji.

Suitable for: 40g size is suitable for dwarf species only, 75g is suitable for all hamster species.

Notes: The 40g breeder tank is considered to be the bare minimum for the dwarf species, it is not suitable for a Syrian hamster. The 75g is considered to be the bare minimum for a Syrian hamster - it is not the best, it is just okay. The 75g is also suitable and the preferred size option for all dwarf species.

Exo Terra Reptile Tanks

Size: 36" x 18" x 18" (equivalent to the size of a 40g breeder).

Price: Prices vary depending on source, but these enclosures can cost an upwards of $300.

Availability: United States, Canada, or second hand sites like Craigslist or Kijiji.

Suitable for: Campbell's dwarf hamster, Roborovski dwarf hamster, Chinese hamster, Winter White dwarf hamster.

Unsuitable for: Syrian hamster

Notes: As these tanks are front opening, they are the least preferred tank option due to the restrictions this causes for how much bedding you can provide. They are also often very expensive compared to regular terrariums or aquariums. The 36" x 18" x 18" size is considered the bare minimum for all dwarf species however this enclosure is not suitable for a Syrian hamster.

Pawhut Wooden Hamster Cage

Size: 45" x 26" x 23"

Price: Averages $115-$140

Availability: Canada (this enclosure is also available in Europe)

Suitable for: All hamster species.

Notes: The levels should be removed (they are not fixed, so pop out with ease) when using this enclosure for hamsters as to allow for ample bedding depth and remove the risk of the animal falling from a height. There may be a small gap where the tray slides out; when using this with hamsters, this tray should be screwed in from the bottom to seal this gap to prevent bedding from ending up all over your floor (the pull out tray is useless when using this enclosure with hamsters anyway due to the bedding depth they require).

As you may have noticed from this list, there are very few commercially available enclosures on the market for Syrian hamster use and often those that are suitable, come with a hefty price tag. Because of this, I have compiled another list with alternative housing options that will be much kinder on your wallet. Check it out over here.

For a more helpful database consisting of a much wider range of commercial enclosures can be found over at the Hamingway over here.
